Marshmallow Consumption: Symbolism of Time Sucks

We have numerous marshmallows in our lives: sweet, tasty marshmallows. Some of these might be family, work, relationships, school—the important marshmallows.

Others might be marshmallows like Facebook, PS3, XBox, Wii, 3DS, iPad, going clubbing, skateboarding, hanging out, drinking coffee, watching Family Guy re-runs... These marshmallows are equally tempting.

Choose wisely! Delayed gratification is an important indicator of future success! Do you really need to go clubbing tonight? Do you really need to buy that new article of clothing? Or do you want to?

Give a title to every piece you write, or else your reader won't understand the context of your post.

Format: Essay-based format, using strong PIE-centric paragraphs; papers with external MLA or APA-citations that demonstrate outside source credibility will receive bonuses. Making the extra-effort to conduct your own independent research into the subject material will equally receive incentive / bonus points. (borrowing books, supplemental materials, etc.)

Today's topics:
1.Read "This is a Photograph of Me," by Margaret Atwood; (online)

Scan / think about potential questions found in Atwood's piece

2. SR: Post an anonymous or signed comment (one paragraph or so) along with your codename for credit on http://mrkmyth.blogspot.com/ Comment on any aspect of "This is a Photograph of Me" in the anonymous comments section for credit. We will discuss Atwood's piece next week so as to review how to conduct a literary analysis.

2. Read "This is a Photograph of Me," by Margaret Atwood; (online)

Scan / think about potential questions found in Atwood's piece. Think about how this piece connects with the Hideo Nakata film, _Ringu_ or the Gore Verbinski remake, _The Ring._ Explain how they are intertextual.

3. If you have a good Wireless Connection/Internet Connection, watch the Power of Myth on YouTube (Joseph Campbell interview) ~1/2 hour worth. React to a specific thing or concept that Campbell discusses.

4. Do a general search on "archetypes" in YouTube or eBrary. Share the link that you found very interesting, explaining fully why that link/video/book was helpful in your understanding of what this course might potentially be about.

5. Do a general Web search on archetypes and archetypal criticism, then identify 5 archetypes and their concrete manifestations...e.g. THE HERO (Neo from the Matrix)

GRADING CRITERIA FOR ANY THINK WRITE: (5 points per category)

1. Purpose: The written piece has a coherent sense of purpose, e.g. a controlling thesis statement, that legitimizes the entire cohesiveness of the content.

2. Audience Appeal: Either via textual evidence that has been analyzed or visual evidence that has been analyzed, the written piece engages the audience's sensibilities and appeals to these sensibilities. Perhaps description or other forms of appealing evidence have been added.

3. Structure and Dynamics: Structuring devices and overall clarity make the written piece smooth and easy to comprehend.

4. Overall Effort: The written work depicts a range from passable to extra-ordinary effort, and avoids a general and telling bare minimum of effort simply to get the blogpost done / the written work wasn't written 10 minutes before class.
